Lesson 2: Arctic Governance Primer, Emma Sulczynski

Of the four priority issues listed for Norway’s 2023-2025 Chairship, the one that resonates the most to me is climate and environment. Our generation is living through an unprecedented time of change and the effects are being felt around the globe but especially so in the Arctic, where we are experiencing warming at several times the rate of the rest of the world. To secure the collective future of the oceans, peoples, and communities of the region, the Arctic Council must take decisive steps to address the threats we are facing from climate change. The natural disasters, scarcity and threats to the Earth’s ecosystems are only going to get worse as time goes on, so taking measures to adapt to the changing landscape and control further damage should take priority. Without a stable climate there can be no economy, no life in the oceans, no civilization on land. It seems the clear top priority to me.

About Emma Sulczynski

I am a third-generation Alaskan born and raised in beautiful Homer. I've always loved plants and the outdoors, and have found myself fascinated by subsistence and medicinal uses for plants since I was young. This class is my way of getting an education on cultural uses for plants and learning how to apply these teachings in a respectful way.
